Safe word is a word used by the submissive partner in a BDSM play/training to indicate to the dominant partner that they have reached their limits, thus preventing potentially harmful situations.[1] It must be previously agreed upon between all participants.

Gags are frowned upon because they restrict the slave's ability to use their safe word and should therefore be used to plays where the slave completely trusts their master/mistress.[1]
